Milblogs and anti-government rhetoric:

by Craig Hooper on June 8, 2010

Anybody wonder if this kook frequented the milblogosphere?  And if he did, which blogs he consumed?  I do.  And I’ve got a pretty darn good guess, too.

Russell Hesch of West Branch, who identified himself as a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, was arrested along with his son, a Colorado resident. The two were charged last week in a federal criminal complaint with sending a threatening letter to U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak, a Menominee Democrat.

Read the letter (Pages 6-7 of the .pdf complaint).  Very graphic stuff coming from a guy who thinks the Federal Government is destroying the nation.  So…to save the nation, he proposes to paint a bridge with the blood of a Senator…and his family.  Creepy.

This is why I worry about the violent anti-government rhetoric that is, increasingly coming from the kooky fringes of the milblogosphere.  Let’s tone it down a notch and encourage healthy civic behavior in milblog readership.

so if a former military officer who is a liberal progressive tries to kill former President Bush or Cheney can we blame dailykos or Nextnavy?

Explorations into extremist internet habits are becoming the norm.

But if certain righty milblogs keep trafficking in rhetoric that militants like, then I guess I’d tell ‘em to be prepared to lawyer up. Because, in my opinion, it’s a matter of time before one of their community members goes and hurts an American…

what proof do you have that they went to those sites?

Howard June 12, 2010 at 12:08 am

I think that the thesis of your article is a stretch.

Dr. Samuel June 12, 2010 at 12:10 am

I agree with Howard Johnson. Some not who was in the Army went off the deep end, and indirectly through a tag you think it was because he read blackfive.net ??

Olson Johnson June 12, 2010 at 12:26 am

Now who can argue with that? I think we’re all indebt to Dr.Samuel Johnson for stating what needed to be said. I am particulary glad that these lovely children are here today to hear that speech. Not only was it authentic frontier gibberish, it expressed the courage little seen in this day and age.[motivating the townspeople]

What do Olson Johnson, Dr. Samuel, Howard, Waco Kid, Steve, 47Bob, Bob and a few other outspoken comment makers have in common?

Wouldn’t be that they all share the IP address–76.89.76.45?

Waco Kid June 12, 2010 at 12:13 pm

Well, it got so that every piss-ant prairie punk who thought he could shoot a gun would ride into town to try out the Waco Kid. I must have killed more men than Cecil B. DeMille.

Steven Johnson June 12, 2010 at 6:32 pm

I agree with Olson Johnson!

Bart: Work here is done. I’m needed elsewhere now. I’m needed wherever outlaws rule the West, wherever innocent women and children are afraid to walk the streets, wherever a man cannot live in simple dignity, wherever a people cry out for justice.
Crowd: [in unison] BULLSHIT!
Bart: All right, you caught me. Speaking the plain truth is getting pretty damn dull around here.

You sound like a supporter of free speech.

Clearly, you and Voltaire are philosophical cousins.

I really like all the references to Blazing Saddles.
